10 books all children must read
7 December 2009

Every year there are so many new children's books being published. These range from picture books all the way up to the fantasy and science fiction genres.

As the list of children's books is just too long, ParenThots and Borders are giving parents our top 10 children's books – these are books that we feel every child should read. Some of them are classics that you may have read as a child.

Brigitte Rozario's 10 books that all children should read:

Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne
This old favourite tale by Milne tells the story of a little boy named Christopher Robin and his toys which come to life in his imagination. The toys that live in the Hundred Acre Wood are Winnie the Pooh, of course, Tigger, Piglet, Eeyore and Owl. Together the friends have some great adventures and learn many lessons on life. Christopher sometimes joins them on their adventures.

What's not to love about Pooh Bear? Who doesn't love that willy nilly silly old bear after all? I actually only read this as an adult but still found Pooh Bear lovable. The books with the illustrations by Ernest H. Shephard will appeal more to adults than children.

The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
This classic is about some animal friends who live in the countryside of England. There's Mole, Ratty, Badger and of course the unforgettable Toad. The snobbish Toad's the one who often gets into all sorts of misadventures and needs the help of his friends.

This is one classic that was introduced to me late – when I was a teenager or in my early 20s. Still a wonderful story to read at any age.

Eloise by Kay Thompson
There are several books on Eloise by Kay Thompson. They include Eloise in Paris, Eloise at Christmastime and Eloise in Moscow. The illustrations are beautiful and the storyline is simple. Eloise is a six-year-old girl who lives on the “tippy-top floor” of New York's very famous Plaza Hotel. As expected of any girl her age, Eloise does get into a whole load of trouble. But you still love her.

I think the illustrations will appeal to you above all else and kids always love stories about children who get into trouble.

Matilda by Roald Dahl
Matilda is a brilliant little girl in spite of her parents who don't encourage her in any way. They would rather she watch TV all day instead of read (which she loves). This doesn't discourage Matilda who goes to the library to read more and more books. At school, Matilda and the other children are terrorised by their headmistress Miss Trunchbull.

There is one good soul in Matilda's life and that is her teacher Miss Honey – the lovely lady who encourages her and the only one who loves her. Matilda eventually discovers she has psychokinetic powers and she uses them to wreak havoc in the lives of Miss Trunchbull and her parents.

Any of Roald Dahl's books is always a great read – not just because of the great storyline and Dahl's imagination but because there's such a feel-good value to it and the good kids always win in the end.

The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett
This is one of those timeless tales. I read it in primary school after borrowing the book from our school library. I still find the tale enchanting today.

It's got all the ingredients to a great story – an orphan left on her own in a big house, a guardian who seemingly doesn't care, a secret garden, a mysterious little boy, and of course a happy ending.

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien
Ah, Tolkien. This is the story that starts off the adventure that ends with The Return of the King. In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, hobbits and the wizard Gandalf are introduced to us. And so is, the Ring! The desired ring is the cause of all the trouble. Bilbo has his grand adventure in this book.

I would recommend this book for the older children. But it's a definite must-read and be prepared to buy The Lord of the Rings immediately after that because your child will want more adventures after that.

Paddington by Michael Bond
This is another book I only read as an adult. Just like Pooh Bear, Paddington is adorable. The story goes that Paddington was named after the Paddington railway station in London where he was found by the Brown family. He came from “Darkest Peru” and had just one tag on his coat. It read “Please look after this bear. Thank you.”

Paddington lives with the Browns and is part of their family. He loves marmalade and frequently ends up with the jam all over him.

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
This is a great book for any little girl to read. I'm not sure if it appeals to boys. The story is set in the 19th century in America. It's about four sisters who are quite different and how they grow up to become lovely young ladies and the suitors that follow.

I always thought I was like Jo, the tomboy who has a passion for writing. Give this book to any girl, she will find one sister to identify with and love. The whole sisterly relationship and atmosphere is very well replicated in this b

Doll Profiles: Mori

Doll Profiles: Mori

Type: Pullip Assa

Modifications: None currently (though she has had on and off re-wigs & rebodies)

Character info:
Full name: Morine "Mori" Jayakody
Birthday: April 14th
Age:17
Nationality: Frebelolakan ( French, Belorussian, and Sri Lankan)
Hobbies:  Creating inventions, fixing up old and broken things, and playing sports.
Sexual orientation:  Straight
Likes:  listening to music, inventing things, playing sports (especially lacrosse & basketball).
Dislikes: Being the center of attention and being forced to lived how others want her to be.
Signature identifier(s) :
-Tool kit/Tools

Habits:
-Tendency to compare herself to other people
-Overworks herself to the point of exhaustion.
-Forgets to eat when she's enveloped in a project.
-When she becomes the center of attention she gets really shy and quiet.

Siblings: Older Sister and Twin brothers (don't have doll forms yet)
Closest friend(s): Levi, Kin, and Rinslet
SO (significant other): Ramsey [Gypsylou's Jade] (On hiatus? I haven't heard from Gypsylou in a while).

Childhood/family life: Mori lived in Chicago her whole life, she is the second eldest child of four children. She was the quiet genius of her family. As the middle child she usually did not get as much attention as her eldest sister or her younger brothers. She would lock herself in her room for hours and hours creating and inventing anything that came to her mind. She didn't have many friends as a kid because they would label her as 'weird' or 'different', so she was usually playing alone with her toy cars at recess. Around the time Mori was in Kindergarten, she met Levi when her family was invited over at the Hanson's (Levi's family), since their fathers' were co-workers. They have been best friends ever since.
Her mother is a French fashion designer of a semi-international company based in Milan. She wanted Mori and her sister to follow in her footsteps as a fashion designer, to be 'the perfect little girls', but Mori had other plans. She never liked wearing dresses, frilly clothing and girly outfits like her sister did. Mori loved to take things apart, put them back together and make new things. Her sister, Becky was the only one who ended up following in her mother's footsteps.  Mori's father is a Belorussian-Sri Lankan computer technician and engineer at HDI. Mori's youngest brothers are twin boys in their last year of middle school. Mori's youngest twin brother aspires to follow his mother and become a fashion designer as well.

Other: *She saved Levi's life after he was attacked by a shark and nearly drown.
*When she was ten years old she was punished for taking apart her mother's sewing machine and using the parts for her science project.

Personality/About
Negative aspects:
Mori always feels the need to compare herself to other people. This is most likely the result of the inferiority complex her mother gave her. Mori's mom would often compare Mori to her sister Becky. She would always tell Mori how she wished she wouldn't be such a stubborn tomboy and act like a regular girl, constantly telling her "Why can't you be more like your sister." She wouldn't support her daughter's hobbies so she hid her tools and threw away her inventions. She even went as far as question her daughter's sexuality and threatened to throw her out of the house. Her Mother's constant slanderous behavior also resulted in a low self confidence level and poor body image. Mori is also extremely shy and quiet when faced with being the center of attention. Sometimes Mori's level headed attitude comes of harsh, offensive, and often insensitive toward others too.

Redeeming aspects:
Mori is a unique blend of brains and brawn. She is very smart straight 'A' student with a creative and extensive imagination. Not only is she a brainiac, but also an athlete. She loves sports, and is pretty good at them too (once she gets the hang of it). She is always thinking of new things to create, or looking for old and obsolete things to fix up/modify. Mori also is a very encouraging friend, if anyone ever has a doubt in their mind, or they can't chase what they love, or go after something they want, Mori will be right behind them motivating and cheering for them all the way.

Scary Toys

Scary Toys

IMO - This is a horrible concept to put in the brains of children and parents. The idea that peace is maintained with weapons and caucasian soldiers is very unnerving to me. Is this what a parent should give to their child? I sinceely hope not. I am offended by the NAME of the toy. This is worse than the pooping animals I found several years ago. Nov. 2011.

Merry Christmas

A First Look at Hot Toys T2 T-800

A First Look at Hot Toys T2 T-800

Hot Toys recently announced their plans for their 2010 line. This is an exclusive new look at another amazing addition to their Movie Masterpiece collection, the 1:6 scale Terminator 2 T-800.
This figure is amazing! Hot Toys just never ceases to amaze us with their life-like detail and amazing craftsmenship, and this figure is no exception. The figure features a headsculpt with authentic likeness to Arnold Swarchenegger as the T-800 from the 1991 film "Terminator 2: Judgement Day." The figure will include 2 spare sets of hands, sawed-off Winchester 1887 shotgun hidden inside a box full of roses, a pistol, his classic sunglasses, and the much anticipated accessory...a spare forarm exposing his t-800 endoskeleton. This is one of the most anticipated figures for 2010 right now, and if this is any hint on the figures due to release in the upcoming year, its going to be a good one!
